CULTURAL INDUSTRIES BY SEX AND AGE

OVERVIEW

Of those employed in Tasmania in the week prior to the 2011 Census, 6,858 (3%) persons reported their main occupation in a cultural industry. Of those employed in a cultural industry, 3,513 (51%) of these did not have a cultural occupation.

The cultural industries that employed the most persons were newspaper and book retailing (815), newspaper publishing (613) and architectural services (600). Architectural services were one of the three cultural industries that employed the most persons nationally.

Of all persons employed in cultural industries in Australia, 2% resided in Tasmania. The cultural industries with the largest proportions of persons employed in Tasmania were museum operation (5%), followed by nature reserves and conservation parks operation (4%).

EMPLOYMENT BY SEX

More males (3,440) than females (3,418) were employed in cultural industries in Tasmania. There were also more males than females employed in cultural industries nationally.

Cultural industries employing high proportions of males were motion picture and video production (78%), architectural services (71%), nature reserves and conservation parks operation (68%), printing (66%) and performing arts operation (62%). Nature reserves and conservation parks operation was one of the three cultural industries that employed the largest proportion of males nationally.

Cultural industries employing high proportions of females in Tasmania were libraries and archives (83%) and arts education (74%). The same cultural industries had the largest proportions of females nationally.

EMPLOYMENT BY AGE

Persons aged 15 to 24 years made up 15% of all persons employed in cultural industries in Tasmania, which was the same proportion of persons aged 15 to 24 years employed in cultural industries nationally.

Cultural industries with the largest number of persons aged 15 to 24 years were newspaper and book retailing (224), motion picture exhibition (115) and video and other electronic media rental and hiring (98). The cultural occupations that employed the largest number of persons aged 15 to 24 years in Tasmania were the same nationally.

Of those cultural industries with more than 50 workers, the cultural industry with the largest proportion of persons aged 15 to 24 years was motion picture exhibition (62%). Only 2% of persons employed in funeral, crematorium and cemetery services and libraries and archives in Tasmania were aged 15 to 24 years.

The cultural industries with the largest number of persons aged 55 years and over in Tasmania were religious services (208), newspaper and book retailing (187), architectural services (161), newspaper publishing (145) and printing (111). The cultural industries that employed the largest number of persons aged 55 years and over in Tasmania were the same as those nationally.

Of those cultural industries employing more than 50 workers, the cultural industries with the largest proportions of persons aged 55 years and over were libraries and archives (38%) and religious services (36%). In Tasmania, 34% of persons aged 55 years and over were employed in funeral, crematorium and cemetery services, compared with 35% nationally.
